KURVE web-app delivers quality and value at new Whitechapel development

The Silk District, developed by Mount Anvil, provides both pay-as-you-go (PAYG) and credit billing options via the KURVE smart metering web-app.

People are visible walking through and sitting within the open space, with balconies overlooking the courtyard from surrounding buildings.
Residents at The Silk District can access heating & hot water consumption data through the KURVE web app, helping them better understand and manage their energy usage.
Residents of a new development in Whitechapel will benefit from cost savings and greater control over their heating and hot water. This is possible through KURVE, the UK’s first digital smart metering web-app for heat networks.
Phase One of The Silk District comprises of 436 residential properties across three buildings. Streets and landscaped gardens connect the development. Residents also benefit from a café, roof terrace and cinema room. Developed by Mount Anvil, the project completed at the end of 2021.

Flexible payment options with PAYG and credit billing

116 of the new homes are managed by housing association L&Q, with the remainder privately owned. All homes will use KURVE for metering & billing. Private residents use monthly credit billing, while L&Q properties will use pay-as-you-go (PAYG). Using the KURVE web-app, L&Q’s residents can control their heating, view consumption history and make payments online. They can access their account from any internet-connected device. This is the first time KURVE, which launched in 2019, has been used for credit billing.

“At Mount Anvil we’re always focused on delivering both quality and value to residents. KURVE gives us the advanced smart meter functionality we wanted in a really user-friendly way and without the need to install costly metering devices in each home. It’s just what we needed. In the past, we’ve struggled to justify the expense of PAYG smart metering, but KURVE has changed the cost-balance equation significantly. We made substantial savings at The Silk District, given the size of site,” said Phil Oades, Estate Manager at Mount Anvil.

How the KURVE web-app helps manage costs

At around £600 per unit, the cost of hardware installation is a major barrier to take-up of conventional hard-wired smart meters. KURVE is designed to make smart metering services more accessible and affordable for heat network users.

Easy access to real-time usage data can reduce energy consumption by around 20%.

Individual metering is also a legal requirement in most cases. It also helps network managers to quickly spot, diagnose and remotely fix any issues affecting the efficiency of the system, avoiding user complaints, engineer callouts or prolonged energy waste.

“Mount Anvil wanted the energy billing for the entire site to come under the KURVE brand, but with different payment solutions available to the customer base,” explains Emily McAlindon, Commercial Director, which created KURVE in partnership with SAV Systems. “Although KURVE is primarily a PAYG app – a billing method many housing providers select to effectively mitigate heat debt – we developed it with multiple flexible billing options. Insite has a long history of working with Mount Anvil on both PAYG and credit billing deployments. We hope to see our affordable KURVE solution selected on even more of Mount Anvil sites going forward.”
